Prof. Dr. mult. Eckhard Nagel has held the chair of Medical Management and Health Sciences at the University of Bayreuth (since 2001), where he has served as Managing Director of the Institute of Medical Management and Health Sciences (IMG) since 2015.

He studied human medicine and philosophy/history at Hannover Medical School and the University of Hannover (1978–1988), earned his Dr. med. in 1987 and his Dr. phil. in 1995, completed his habilitation in surgery in 1997 and received an honorary doctorate in theology in 2010.

Nagel was a transplant surgeon, head of the Augsburg Transplant Center (2001–2010), Medical Director of the Essen University Hospital (2010–2015) and a member of the German Ethics Council (2008, 2012).

His research focuses on public health, prevention, health promotion, medical ethics, prioritization and health economics.

In the context of medical cannabis therapy, he gives lectures on ethical aspects, for example „Ein ethischer Blick auf das Thema Medizinalcannabis“ (An ethical look at medical cannabis) at the 420Pharma Circle of Experts, and advocates for further studies on real-world applications.
